Director, Warrnambool Art Gallery
Curator, Kait James: Red Flags

It has been an honour to work with Kait James during this moment of great energy and experimentation in her practice. Not only is Red Flags Kait’s most ambitious solo exhibition to date, pushing her practice to new heights, it also represents the first time the artist will present a solo exhibition outside her home state of Victoria.

Kait and her practice are an exemplar of the Warrnambool Art Gallery’s commitment to presenting new ideas by artists exploring the most important social, cultural, political and artistic questions of our time. Through her work, Kait strives to inform audiences, create a shared cultural understanding and, ultimately, celebrate the art and culture of Australia’s First Peoples.

I am deeply indebted to Kait for welcoming me into her home and studio, and acknowledge the labour required to share her story and history with me. I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to exhibition partners NETS Victoria – in particular Director Claire Wat- son, Senior Exhibition Coordinator Sherryn Vardy, and the Artistic Program Advisory Committee chaired by David Sequeira – for their commitment to Kait James and their tireless efforts in bringing this exhibition to audiences across the nation. Thank you also to Myles Russell-Cook, Raquel Ormella and Kate ten Buuren for their important essays, included within the pages of this book.

And, finally, the Red Flags exhibition and subsequent tour would not be possible without the generous support from NETS Victoria, and the Australian Government through Creative Australia and the Office for the Arts’ Visions of Australia Program.
