Kait James
14.05.25
Kait James is a Wadawurrung artist whose practice reclaims and recontextualises mass-produced objects and spaces to challenge the commodification and attempted erasure of First Nations culture. Drawing on both her Indigenous and Anglo heritage, she interrogates stereotypes and colonial narratives through a lens that is both critical and subversive.
James has held solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Koorie Heritage Trust, Neon Parc, and Warrnambool Art Gallery. Her current exhibition Kait James: Red Flags is currently touring nationally with NETS Victoria. Her work is held in major collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Geelong Art Gallery, University of Melbourne, Koorie Heritage Trust, Artbank, and Murdoch University.
In 2019, she won Craft Victoria’s Emerging Artist Award and the Koorie Art Show’s Reconciliation Art Award. She has also been a finalist in the Churchie National Emerging Artist Award, the King Wood Mallesons Contemporary Art Prize, the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award and is represented by Neon Parc.
