The Cinemas Project update

Travelling across Victoria visiting the sites of cinemas currently in use, abandoned and re-purposed, or long disappeared is an important part of the development of The Cinemas Project, an exciting new project being developed by NETS Victoria with curator, Bridget Crone.

Bridget has visited Central Victoria and Gippsland, and is about to undertake a trip through the western part of the State, a journey that will stretch from Swan Hill and Mildura down to Portland and Warrnambool.

“I’m particularly excited about this trip as there is an enormous number of cinemas and cinema-sites to visit,” says Bridget. “Cities such as Mildura were home to magnificent cinema buildings in the first half of the Twentieth Century and small towns such as Charlton still have their historic cinemas, which are much loved by locals.”

The Cinemas Project is a programme of newly commissioned work by contemporary artists working in relation to the sites of cinema in regional Victoria. Still standing, in use, abandoned, re-purposed or existing only in memory, The Cinemas Project addresses movie theatres as spectral sites full of spirited visions, ghostly images and the theatre of memory.
