Our Story

NETS Victoria is a member of NETS Australia, a national network of touring exhibition agencies located in each state and territory and committed to promoting and presenting contemporary visual arts, craft and design through touring exhibitions of excellence. For further information on NETS Australia please visit www.netsaustralia.org.au.

NETS Victoria was established in 1988 to improve access for regional audiences to contemporary art and craft, and has been housed within the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) since 1991. NETS Victoria is now located at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square.

NETS Victoria continues to benefit from the NGV's generous in-kind assistance, which includes office accommodation, human resources and financial support. The NGV Director, Dr. Gerard Vaughan, is represented on the NETS Victoria Committee of Management by a nominee. Through NETS Victoria, the NGV is able to make a significant commitment to the people of regional Victoria and to smaller communities and galleries in metropolitan Melbourne.

NETS Victoria became an incorporated association in June 1999.

As the peak body for visual arts touring, NETS Victoria:

  • Generates ambitious and stimulating contemporary art projects through our annual Exhibition Development Fund (EDF) grants.
  • Partners with organisations to develop meaningful and engaging touring exhibitions that connect people with the best contemporary art, craft and design.
  • Manages each touring project from fundraising, freight logistics, registration, conservation management and the development of interpretative material to installation, marketing support, public programs and grant acquittals.
  • Provides touring advice to curators, artists and organisations.
  • Sells the touring bible, Travelling Exhibitions: a practical handbook for metropolitan and regional galleries and museums.
  • Publishes Art_a_base, a biannual register of touring exhibitions to assist galleries with exhibition programming.
  • Presents professional development seminars for arts workers including the annual NETS Victoria symposium.
