On November 11 NETS Victoria hosted a professional development seminar with the PGAV called Social Media: I know I should be doing it, but...
The seminar featured presentations by Paula Bray from the Powerhouse Museum, Emily Sexton and Nicole Smith from Next Wave, and entertainment lawyer Alex Farrar.
Paula Bray spoke about the innovative ways the Powerhouse Museum is digitising its collection and engaging a broad online audience around the world. Despite some of the high-tech ventures the Museum is embarking on, her presentation reinforced the way low- or no-cost technology and websites, such as Flickr and Google Maps, can be used in creative ways. Nicole Smith and Emily Sexton’s presentation discussed Next Wave’s approach to using social media as a biennial festival and artist development organisation. They talked about the importance of maintaining dialogue with their online following, and how to be an active participant in social media by engaging with users, and sharing and promoting interesting content – not just your own. Entertainment lawyer and social media guru/junkie Alex Farrar brought her lawyer’s dry wit to the proceedings, outlining – with some colourful examples – the principles organisations need to be aware of when using social media. She stressed the importance of those responsible for the organisation’s social media presence to have an understanding of copyright, defamation and privacy laws, underlining the way organisations can use social media effectively while being aware the risks involved. An audio recording of the event was made and is currently being edited. Please check back for updates.
